Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 10/25/13
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Classes were given a pretest for multiplication. There were some struggles, but I thought we were ready to tackle the 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and 3 digit by 2 digit numbers. Well, I was wrong. Since then, I told the kids “we are going to back up the bus and do some basics over…working with facts and arrays to help us build better number sense.” This is helping, and we will continue Number Talks and other activities to help strengthen our skills. Any additional support at home would be great. I will be working with students who need extra practice on Monday, Oct. 28 during the first part of their recess.
Other info…Make sure to ask your child about the estimations he/she did with fall items…pumpkins, leaves, scarecrows, Indian corn, etc. We talked about strategies and the importance of estimations.
Reading: “Mirror, Mirror… how do you reflect?” We reflected on writing, theme, and evidence in our writing and provided targeted feedback to each other and to ourselves. We made our writing stronger. I am so proud of the effort students put into their feedback, taking the responsibility seriously. We also discovered the setting of stories.
We began reading a new chapter book as our class read aloud entitled: Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. It is a mystery that takes place in Alexandriaville, Ohio in present day. Ask your child to describe this amazing library.
Science: We began the process of free exploration of our new unit of study on space. We are exploring our wonders and interests by browsing books, Internet resources and other sources to build our excitement for this unit.
Social Studies: Students are discovering all the countries and dependencies that make up the continents of North and South America. We just started looking into what landforms are and the various ones included in these two continents. Students will be choosing a landform to research and will present that information. Guidelines were given today and the project is due November 4. Any support would be appreciated.
Word Study: It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We have talked about picking appropriate words for our skill level…not too hard that it leads to so much frustration, but challenging enough so we are learning new patterns and vocabulary.
Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
Upcoming events:
Friday, November 1 End of the 1st 12 weeks…progress reports go home at a later date, not today

Saturday, November 9 HCR Carnival
